Damon Braces are fixed braces designed for versatile treatment from minor to severe orthodontic cases of misaligned, overcrowded, protruded and spaced teeth. Damon Braces are Ideal for treating conditions of malocclusion where the teeth abnormally meet or for jaw misalignment, providing effective teeth straightening results.
What can Damon Braces treat?
Damon Braces may be used to treat minor, moderate and severe conditions of malocclusion or bite disorders, overbite, underbite, overcrowding, crooked teeth and spacing between teeth.
As an improvement on traditional braces, Damon Braces remove or eliminate the need to extract teeth. However, in certain severe cases of teeth overcrowding or abnormal dental structure pressurising the jaw line, the orthodontist may recommend dental extraction for the patient's well-being and best treatment success with Damon Braces.
How do Damon Braces work?
Damon Braces have a slide mechanism which is self-ligating to facilitate oral movement, whilst using orthodontic pressure to move and reposition teeth into their correct form.
Comprised of ceramic brackets the wire is designed to slide through the brackets for self-ligation. Use of elastics is not necessary as with conventional braces. Patients experience smooth-wearing braces for improved function and greater comfort.
Although self-ligating, Damon Braces are not Lingual Braces as such because they do not fit behind the front teeth but are fixed to the front of teeth. Discretion is achieved with Damon Braces for aesthetically-pleasing quality through tooth coloured components.
Damon Braces benefits and risks
Damon Braces are more expensive than traditional braces and do not offer the same level of discretion as Invisalign and Clearstep orthodontic treatments. However, Damon Braces may be used to treat more severe orthodontic conditions that these more discreet options cannot treat. Those with milder conditions desiring more discretion and removable treatment may opt for Invisalign or Clearstep.
Individuals choose Damon Braces because they are designed for aesthetic appeal, provide comfort, can be conveniently cleaned and provide a reasonable time scale for treatment results. Damon Braces do not cause the discomfort and stigma of older traditional braces.
Existing teeth structure is more likely to be preserved with Damon Braces treatment, preventing the need to extract teeth. Teeth extraction was not uncommon with prior conventional brace treatments. Patients experience fewer appointments for adjustment because of the self-ligating slide mechanism of Damon Braces.
Damon Braces fitting
Before patients consent to treatment with Damon Braces the orthodontist discusses what is involved in the treatment as well as the benefits, risks and costs. If Damon Braces are chosen for treatment by the patient, the orthodontist takes an oral impression to custom-make the Damon Braces for a bespoke treatment experience.
When ready the patient's mouth is prepared for fitting of the Damon Braces. The orthodontist ensures the mouth is free of infection and clean to receive the new device. Using dental bonding material such as resin the tooth coloured brackets are bonded to the front teeth and threaded with the self-ligating wire.
The fitting takes approximately an hour and the orthodontist will explain how best to continue oral hygiene and care for the Damon Brace. Patients are periodically monitored for treatment progress and are encouraged to attend regular dental check-ups and professional dental cleaning where necessary.
Once treatment is complete the orthodontist may recommend the patient wear a retainer to keep the repositioned teeth in their new position. Treatment with retainers is usually for six months and patients can then enjoy the full benefits of a straight smile.
